Dr. D.KOEPPEN IS THE FUTURE PRESIDENT OF IAHH

Dear friends, esteemed colleagues, ladies and gentlemen!

We, the members of Organizing Committee, have taken the responsibility to You and to the International Association of Hirudotherapeutists and Hirudologists (ISHH) for holding ISHH Workshop, the main task of which is the formation of ISHH working organs and election the President of IAHH. The last one is the most difficult proccess for the large meeting of people, most of all don’t know each other. That is why we decided to be limited with Germany representatives, who have the grave achievements faced by world science and clinical practice.

Suffice it to recall the late Prof. F.Markwardt, ( Erfurt/Germany ) who first isolated, purified and investigated hirudin of the medicinal leech, and who presented to the world recombinant hirudin. This unique antithrombin is used in clinics of many countries and it saved some thousands of human life. Prof. Markwardt created the school of his pupils and followings. 

We remember investigations of Dr. E. Fink , Prof. H.Fritz and his pupils, above all Prof. Ch.Sommerhoff in Munich. They opened for the world the richness of the medicinal leech pharmacy as regulators of many vitally important biologically active proteins, which actions are realized during hirudotherapy.

We also want to recall Prof. A. Michalsen (Charité Clinic/Berlin) who initiated evidence-based clinical trials in hirudotherapy by conducting the first controlled randomized leech treatment study in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

As a result of consultations with German hirudologists it was clear, that they support                   Dr. D. Koeppen, a worker of "BBEZ” Company (Biebertal), as a  candidate to  the post of ISHH President, whom we will elect at the Workshop in Sofia.

Detlev Koeppen, PhD, MSc psychol.

Detlev Koeppen was born 10 SEP 1944 in Spremberg (Brandenburg/Germany).

He had worked up to 1975 as scientific assistant in Wiesbaden and lecturer in Darmstadt after having received his master degree in psychology in 1971.

He joined the medical department of Hoechst AG in Frankfurt in 1975 as Clinical Project Manager Central Nervous System.

In this position, he organised international clinical trials and the global submission for marketing authorisation of compounds in the field of epilepsy, depression and anxiety.

As follow-up positions, he was head of the pharma Sales Force in Austria and of the pharmaceutical Business Unit Endocrinology, being responsible for the development and marketing of various compounds within the Hoechst company.

From 1998 onwards, he was head of the Business Development Units of two major Clinical Research Organisations (CROs).

From 2000 to 2005, he was heading the Account Management group of chemfidence GmbH, a provider of chemical and Life Science industry.

From 2006 to 2008, he was consultant to various pharmaceutical biotech companies.

In 2008, he joined the Biebertaler Blutegelzucht GmbH (Germany) as consultant for the submission of the file for the marketing authorisation of medicinal leech therapy.

Until the current date, he works for the Biebertaler Blutegelzucht GmbH on various projects comprising clinical studies and marketing.
